BMW fault 2DD9 - No message from ARS

P3206 · P3207 · P3208

Description

2DD9 is logged by the DME when it stops receiving valid CAN messages from the ARS (Active Roll Stabilization) module, also known as Dynamic Drive. ARS uses hydraulic actuators on each anti-roll bar to counteract body roll during cornering. The DME needs ARS data because the hydraulic pump load requires torque coordination. When ARS communication is lost the system falls into failsafe mode where the anti-roll bars behave conventionally. Only set on vehicles equipped with ARS.

This code has 3 variants with different causes and fixes. Pick the one your scanner reported.

2DD9 / P3206 Timeout

The DME expects cyclic CAN messages from ARS. After approximately 400 ms with no messages received (once bus activity is active, 800 ms after terminal 15), this variant sets. The ARS is offline, not powered, or there is a break in the bus path.

Symptoms (4)

  • Dynamic Drive or chassis stabilization warning light (yellow or red).
  • Noticeable body roll in cornering compared to normal operation.
  • Vehicle may feel softer or more pitch-sensitive.
  • ARS typically does not respond to diagnostic tools when this variant is set.

Common Causes (5)

  • Low hydraulic fluid in the Dynamic Drive or power-steering reservoir. Dynamic Drive shares the hydraulic circuit with power steering on most platforms, and low level causes ARS to disable.
  • ARS control unit power or ground fault. The module has a dedicated fuse.
  • Broken CAN wiring between ARS and the rest of the network.
  • Blown ARS fuse.
  • Failed ARS control unit.

Diagnosis Steps (4)

  1. Read fault memory, noting active vs. stored status. Check hydraulic fluid level first. Low fluid is the single most common trigger and the cheapest fix.
  2. Scan ARS directly. If ARS fails to respond, proceed as an offline module. If it responds with its own codes, use those to guide diagnosis.
  3. Verify the ARS fuse and power supply. Check the fuse and measure B+ and ground at the module connector.
  4. Inspect CAN wiring to the ARS module, particularly at harness flex points and connectors. Bus termination should read approximately 60 ohms at the OBD port with the network asleep.

Resolution

Top up hydraulic fluid to the correct level with the manufacturer-specified fluid (verify per the vehicle's documentation, do not substitute). Address any hydraulic leaks at the pump, valve block, or oscillating motors at each anti-roll bar. For ARS module replacement, the new module requires programming, coding, and a commissioning procedure via ISTA (pressure sensor offset learning, actuator commissioning). Clear codes on DME and ARS after repair.

2DD9 / P3207 No signal / alive counter error

The DME receives ARS messages but the rolling alive counter is not incrementing correctly over the detection window (approximately 360 ms). The ARS transmitter is partially operational: frames are on the bus but the activity signal is stalled. Typically points to an ARS internal fault or a bus interference issue.

Symptoms (4)

  • Dynamic Drive warning, usually yellow, escalating to red if multiple faults are present.
  • ARS function may be intermittent or disabled.
  • Often occurs alongside hydraulic pressure or commissioning faults inside ARS.
  • Noticeable change in cornering feel during the fault window.

Common Causes (4)

  • ARS internal watchdog reset, commonly caused by marginal supply voltage or low hydraulic pressure.
  • ARS firmware or coding corruption from an interrupted programming session.
  • Weak battery triggering undervoltage resets in the ARS module.
  • Internal ARS electronics fault.

Diagnosis Steps (4)

  1. Read ARS fault memory in detail. Look for pressure sensor, commissioning, supply voltage, or internal hardware faults logged inside ARS.
  2. Check hydraulic fluid level and, if possible, run the ARS pressure sensor live-data display. Unstable pressure readings point to a hydraulic cause.
  3. Test the battery and charging system. Voltage drops below specification cause the ARS module to reset mid-drive and produce alive-counter faults.
  4. If ARS was recently programmed or coded, re-flash it with the correct software. Interrupted programming can leave the module in an inconsistent state.

Resolution

Resolve the underlying hydraulic, electrical, or software issue. Re-flash or re-code the ARS control unit as needed. For module replacement, run the ARS commissioning procedure via ISTA after installation (pressure sensor offset learning is done during commissioning). Clear codes on DME and ARS and test with cornering maneuvers to verify stability.

2DD9 / P3208 Plausibility error

The DME receives ARS messages with valid counter and checksum, but compares the reported torque demand or pressure data against its own model (based on lateral acceleration and road speed) and finds them implausible. The detection window is approximately 500 ms. This is an integrity check between DSC and ARS data streams.

Symptoms (4)

  • Dynamic Drive warning light.
  • Altered or reduced body-roll compensation.
  • Frequently accompanied by DSC codes or related sensor faults.
  • Can appear after DSC work, suspension work, or alignment.

Common Causes (4)

  • DSC-side sensor fault (yaw rate, lateral acceleration, wheel speed) producing incorrect inputs to ARS.
  • ARS pressure sensor offset drift. The offset is taught in during commissioning and can drift over time.
  • Hydraulic fault in ARS: leaking oscillating motor or valve block distorting actual pressures vs. commanded.
  • Steering-angle sensor calibration issue.

Diagnosis Steps (4)

  1. Scan DSC and ARS in parallel. ARS plausibility faults very often trace back to DSC-side sensor issues. Address any DSC codes before focusing on ARS.
  2. Run ARS commissioning via ISTA if it has not been done recently. This re-learns the pressure sensor offsets and can clear drift-induced plausibility faults.
  3. Inspect the ARS hydraulic system for leaks at the valve block, oscillating motors on each anti-roll bar, and along the high-pressure hose runs. Check live pressure data with the engine running and the steering turned.
  4. Verify steering-angle sensor calibration. An out-of-calibration SZL can cascade into ARS plausibility faults.

Resolution

Repair the underlying DSC sensor, steering-angle, or hydraulic fault first, then re-run ARS commissioning via ISTA. Bleeding and pressure sensor offset learning are required after most ARS hydraulic work. Clear codes on DME, ARS, DSC, and SZL after repair.
