BMW fault 2E62 - Fuel injection plausibility (cold start)
P1210 · Cold start injection plausibility
2E62 is set by the DME when fuel injection timing on bank 1 does not match the expected calibration during the cold start catalyst heating phase. The DME commands multiple injection events per cycle to rapidly heat the catalytic converters after a cold start.
During cold start with catalyst heating and multiple injection mode active, the DME detected injection timing on bank 1 that did not match its calibration model. The fault is logged immediately after the catalyst heating phase completes with no debounce.

- Severity
- Warning
- Likely cause
- DME internal calibration error
- Common fix
- DME software update or DME replacement
Symptoms
- Check engine light on in most markets (varies by engine variant and calibration, e.g. N54 variants differ between ECE market years).
- No noticeable driveability change in most cases (fault occurs during a brief cold-start phase).
Common causes
- DME internal calibration or computation error. ISTA's primary service measure is DME replacement.
- Degraded fuel injectors on bank 1 deviating from the DME's model during multi-injection cold start.
- Insufficient high-pressure fuel rail pressure during cold start altering injection timing.
- Outdated DME software with overly sensitive plausibility thresholds.
Diagnosis
- Check for related fuel pressure or misfire fault codes and address those first.
- Check whether a DME software update is available via ISTA P. Apply if available, clear codes, and perform a full cold-start test (vehicle must cool completely).
- If the fault returns, check high-pressure fuel rail pressure during cranking and cold idle against specification using ISTA live data.
- Evaluate bank 1 injector quantity correction values in ISTA. Significant deviation suggests injector service or replacement.
- If fuel system and injectors are within spec, DME replacement may be required per ISTA service guidance.
Resolution
Start with a DME software update check, as this resolves the fault in some cases. If the fault persists with current software and no fuel system issues, DME replacement is the ISTA-directed repair. A replacement DME requires programming and coding via ISTA P.
