Fault code

BMW fault 4E87 - Solenoid valve 4 (shift lock)

P0982 · Control circuit low

4E87 is stored by the EGS when it detects a low-voltage condition on the shift lock solenoid (solenoid valve 4) control circuit. The shift lock solenoid is a safety mechanism that physically locks the gear selector to prevent unintended gear changes when the required conditions are not met.

The EGS detects a low voltage on the shift lock solenoid control circuit, indicating an open circuit, high resistance, or a solenoid coil failure. The monitoring runs with ignition on and battery voltage between 7V and 16V. A warning lamp is triggered via CAN.

Likely cause
Wiring fault at the shift lock solenoid or selector lever switch
Common fix
Repairing wiring or connectors at pins 7/11

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp illuminated.
  • Gear selector may not lock properly between positions.
  • No status feedback on vehicles with M-type (mechanical) gear selectors.

Common causes

  • Loose sockets at pins 7 or 11 of the transmission plug or selector lever switch connector.
  • Damaged or corroded wiring between the selector lever switch and the transmission plug.
  • Failed shift lock solenoid coil.
  • Selector lever position switch failure from contact wear or water ingress.

Diagnosis

  1. Perform an electrical check on the selector lever position switch wiring, the shift lock solenoid, and the transmission plug. Inspect specifically for loose sockets at pins 7 and 11 and repair as indicated.
  2. If the fault is passive, clear the fault memory and road test under monitored conditions: apply the brake repeatedly while in Park and Neutral to exercise the shift lock circuit. If the code does not return, the vehicle is operating normally.
  3. If the code returns, recheck all peripheral wiring and connectors. If the problem persists after wiring checks, the mechatronic unit requires replacement. On some vehicles the shift lock solenoid is part of the selector lever module rather than the mechatronic, so confirm the solenoid location against the wiring diagram for the specific vehicle before replacing.

Resolution

Repair any loose sockets or damaged wiring at pins 7 and 11 of the transmission plug or selector lever switch. If the solenoid has failed and is part of the selector lever module, replace that assembly. If the solenoid is inside the mechatronic, mechatronic replacement is required. Reset EGS adaptation values after any mechatronic replacement. Clear the fault memory and road test with brake application in Park and Neutral to confirm the code does not return.
