BMW 4F8A — Transmission Ratio Monitoring, Shift 4-5
- Severity
- Informational
- Module
- EGS
- OBD-II Code
- P17E9
Description
Fault code 4F8A is logged by the EGS module when it detects an abnormal gear ratio during the 4-5 upshift in the ZF 6HP automatic transmission. The 4-5 shift involves releasing clutch A (forward clutch) and applying clutch B (direct clutch), while clutch E remains engaged throughout. This is one of the few shifts where clutch A releases rather than stays applied.
During the 4-5 upshift, clutch A releases and clutch B applies while clutch E remains engaged. The EGS logs 4F8A when the ratio change does not match the expected transition. The default mode is 4th gear.
Safety Warnings
Do not continue driving if the transmission enters limp mode repeatedly. Have the vehicle towed if limp mode recurs.
4F8A - P17E9: Transmission Ratio Monitoring, Shift 4-5 - Ratio monitoring
Symptoms
- Transmission warning (CC-ID 420)
- Transmission enters limp mode locked in 4th gear
- RPM flare during the 4-5 upshift at highway speed
- Harsh 4-5 shift
- Shuddering during the transition from 4th to 5th at moderate throttle
Common Causes
- Clutch B solenoid or pressure regulator wear — clutch B must apply quickly during the A-to-B handoff. Delayed B apply causes a flare.
- Low or degraded transmission fluid.
- Clutch A solenoid wear — if clutch A does not release cleanly.
- Valve body bore wear in the A or B circuits.
- Clutch E instability — clutch E must stay fully engaged throughout this shift. If E is borderline due to stator bushing or pressure issues, the shift quality degrades even though E is not transitioning.
- Mechatronic seal degradation.
Diagnosis Steps
Read fault memory — check for 4F8A and related codes. Co-occurrence with 4F85 (clutch E) suggests E clutch instability is contributing to the 4-5 shift fault.
Check transmission fluid level and condition.
Read clutch adaptation values — compare A, B, and E values.
Clear faults, service fluid, road test — focus on the 4-5 shift at highway speed under varying throttle loads.
Mechatronic overhaul if fault persists — solenoids, seals, Sonnax ZIP kit.
If unresolved — transmission removal. Inspect clutch A, clutch B, and clutch E packs. Check stator bushing.
Resolution
- Fluid service — drain, refill, pan/filter, adaptation reset.
- Mechatronic overhaul — solenoids, seals, Sonnax ZIP kit.
- Internal repair — clutch pack replacement as needed, stator bushing if E is involved. Refer to BMW ETK / RealOEM for part numbers.
- Transmission replacement — if multiple packs are damaged.
