BMW 4F8B — Transmission Ratio Monitoring, Shift 5-6

Severity
Informational
Module
EGS
OBD-II Code
P17EA

Description

Fault code 4F8B is logged by the EGS module when it detects an abnormal gear ratio during the 5-6 upshift in the ZF 6HP automatic transmission. The 5-6 shift involves releasing clutch B (direct clutch) and applying brake C (2-6 brake), while clutch E remains engaged. This shift typically occurs during highway acceleration or cruise and places sustained load on clutch E.

During the 5-6 upshift, clutch B releases and brake C applies while clutch E stays engaged. The EGS logs 4F8B when the measured ratio deviates from the expected 5-6 transition. The default mode is 5th gear.

Safety Warnings

Do not continue driving if the transmission enters limp mode repeatedly. Have the vehicle towed if limp mode recurs.

4F8B - P17EA: Transmission Ratio Monitoring, Shift 5-6 - Ratio monitoring

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning (CC-ID 420)
  • Transmission enters limp mode locked in 5th gear
  • RPM flare during the 5-6 upshift at highway speed
  • The transmission may refuse to shift into 6th gear, remaining in 5th
  • Harsh 5-6 shift

Common Causes

  • Brake C pressure issues — brake C must apply quickly during the B-to-C handoff.
  • Clutch B release issues — delayed B release causes overlap or bind.
  • Clutch E instability — E must remain fully clamped during this shift. A borderline E clutch may contribute to ratio deviation even though E is not transitioning.
  • Low or degraded transmission fluid.
  • Center support bushing wear — both B and C circuits route through the center support.
  • Valve body bore wear or solenoid degradation.

Diagnosis Steps

  1. Read fault memory — check for 4F8B and related codes. Co-occurrence with 4F85 (clutch E) is common — 6th gear uses both brake C and clutch E.

  2. Check fluid level and condition.

  3. Read clutch adaptation values — compare B, C, and E values.

  4. Clear faults, service fluid, road test — focus on the 5-6 shift at highway speed.

  5. Mechatronic overhaul if fault persists.

  6. If unresolved — transmission removal. Inspect brake C, clutch B, clutch E, and center support bushing.

Resolution

  • Fluid service — drain, refill, pan/filter, adaptation reset.
  • Mechatronic overhaul — solenoids, seals, Sonnax ZIP kit.
  • Internal repair — clutch/brake pack replacement as needed, center support and stator bushings. Refer to BMW ETK / RealOEM for part numbers.
  • Transmission replacement — if multiple packs are damaged.
