BMW 5A59 — DKG Cut-Off Path 1 Valve
P2854 · P2853
Description
BMW fault code 5A59 indicates that the DKG mechatronic unit has detected a fault with cut-off path 1 — the hydraulic safety circuit that depressurizes clutch 1 when disengagement is commanded. The cut-off valve and associated shift valve must reliably vent clutch pressure to the reservoir (tank). When this path fails, clutch 1 cannot be safely disengaged, and the GS module disables clutch circuit 1. This fault is closely related to 5A44 (clutch 1 pressure) and may appear alongside it.
Safety warning
Transmission damage risk. A stuck cut-off valve can prevent clutch disengagement, risking clutch overheating and internal damage. This is a mechatronic fault that requires ISTA diagnosis. Do not attempt to clear and drive — the safety lockout exists to protect the transmission.
This code has 2 variants:
5A59 / P2854 — Clutch B pressure discharge fault
The GS module detected that the clutch B hydraulic circuit on cut-off path 1 is not discharging pressure correctly. When the cut-off valve commands depressurization, residual pressure remains in the circuit, indicating a stuck shift valve or control valve. Monitoring requires terminal 15 on and battery voltage above 10V.
Symptoms (4)
- Dashboard warning: "Transmission malfunction! Drive gently" (ID 365)
- Limp-home mode: gears R, 1, 3, 5, and 7 no longer available (clutch circuit 1 disabled)
- Only even gears (2, 4, 6) remain available
- May be accompanied by fault 5A44 (clutch 1 pressure irregularity)
Common Causes (4)
- Defective shift valve in the mechatronic module. The shift valve directs hydraulic flow in the cut-off path. If it sticks in the pressurized position, the circuit cannot vent to reservoir.
- Sticking control valve (PV1). If PV1 does not return to its zero position, residual pressure remains in the clutch B circuit.
- Contaminated transmission fluid. Debris or degraded fluid can cause valve stiction throughout the mechatronic valve body.
- Mechatronic module internal electrical fault. Solenoid driver issues can prevent the valve from actuating.
Diagnosis Steps (8)
Precondition: Both transmission units in neutral, engine running, ISTA connected.
Run cut-off path 1 test. Execute ISTA test routine:
Test_CutOff_K1_02Evaluate pressure behavior in clutch 1:
- Pressure remains constant (does not drop) → the shift valve is stuck. The cut-off path cannot vent. Proceed to resolution — replace mechatronic module.
- Pressure drops to zero (cut-off works) → continue to step 3.
Check PV1 zero position. Run ISTA test routine:
Test_PV1-0_02Evaluate PV1 test result:
- Pressure < 1.8 bar in clutch 1 → PV1 returns to zero correctly. Clear fault code — the issue was transient.
- Pressure ≥ 1.8 bar in clutch 1 → PV1 control valve is defective (stuck, not returning to zero). Replace mechatronic module.
- Shift valve stuck: Replace mechatronic module. Shift valves are internal to the valve body and not individually replaceable.
- PV1 control valve defective: Replace mechatronic module.
- Transient fault (tests pass): Clear fault code and road test.
- After mechatronic replacement, run all ISTA transmission adaptation and clutch learning service functions.
- Dealer/specialist repair only.
5A59 / P2853 — Clutch A pressure discharge fault
The GS module detected that the clutch A hydraulic circuit on cut-off path 1 is not discharging pressure correctly when depressurization is commanded. This is the counterpart to P2854 on the same cut-off path, affecting the other clutch circuit routed through path 1.
Symptoms (3)
- Dashboard warning: "Transmission malfunction! Drive gently" (ID 365)
- Limp-home mode: gears R, 1, 3, 5, and 7 no longer available (clutch circuit 1 disabled)
- Only even gears (2, 4, 6) remain available
Common Causes (4)
- Defective shift valve in the mechatronic module. Stuck shift valve prevents the clutch A circuit from venting through path 1.
- Sticking control valve. The proportional valve controlling clutch A flow on this path fails to return to zero.
- Contaminated transmission fluid causing valve stiction.
- Mechatronic module solenoid driver fault.
Diagnosis Steps (7)
Precondition: Both transmission units in neutral, engine running, ISTA connected.
Run cut-off path 1 test. Execute ISTA test routine:
Test_CutOff_K1_02Evaluate pressure behavior:
- Pressure remains constant → shift valve stuck. Replace mechatronic module.
- Pressure drops → continue to PV zero-position check using
Test_PV1-0_02.
Evaluate PV test:
- Pressure < 1.8 bar → valve returns to zero. Clear fault code.
- Pressure ≥ 1.8 bar → control valve defective. Replace mechatronic module.
- Shift valve or control valve defective: Replace mechatronic module.
- Tests pass: Clear fault code and road test.
- After replacement, run ISTA adaptation and clutch learning service functions.
- Dealer/specialist repair only.
