BMW 5A5A — DKG Cut-Off Path 2 Valve

P2853 · P2854

Description

BMW fault code 5A5A indicates that the DKG mechatronic unit has detected a fault with cut-off path 2 — the hydraulic safety circuit that depressurizes clutch 2 when disengagement is commanded. This is the counterpart to 5A59 (cut-off path 1), affecting the even-gear clutch circuit. When path 2 cannot vent pressure to reservoir, clutch 2 cannot be safely disengaged, and the GS module locks out gears 2, 4, and 6. This fault is closely related to 5A45 (clutch 2 pressure).

Safety warning

Transmission damage risk. A stuck cut-off valve prevents safe clutch disengagement. Do not clear and continue driving — the safety lockout protects the transmission from damage. ISTA diagnosis required.

This code has 2 variants:

5A5A / P2853 — Clutch A pressure discharge fault

The GS module detected that the clutch A hydraulic circuit on cut-off path 2 is not discharging pressure correctly. When the cut-off valve commands depressurization, residual pressure remains, indicating a stuck shift valve or control valve. Monitoring requires terminal 15 on and battery voltage above 10V.

Symptoms (4)

  • Dashboard warning: "Transmission malfunction! Drive gently" (ID 365)
  • Limp-home mode: gears 2, 4, and 6 no longer available (clutch circuit 2 locked out)
  • Only odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7) and reverse remain available
  • May be accompanied by fault 5A45 (clutch 2 pressure irregularity)

Common Causes (4)

  1. Defective shift valve in the mechatronic module. The shift valve for cut-off path 2 sticks in the pressurized position, preventing the clutch A circuit from venting.
  2. Sticking control valve (PV2). If PV2 does not return to zero, residual pressure remains in the circuit.
  3. Contaminated transmission fluid. Debris causes valve stiction in the path 2 valve body.
  4. Mechatronic module solenoid driver fault.

Diagnosis Steps (8)

Precondition: Both transmission units in neutral, engine running, ISTA connected.

  1. Run cut-off path 2 test. Execute ISTA test routine: Test_CutOff_K2_02

  2. Evaluate pressure behavior in clutch 2:

    • Pressure remains constant → shift valve stuck. Replace mechatronic module.
    • Pressure drops to zero → continue to step 3.
  3. Check PV2 zero position. Run ISTA test routine: Test_PV2-0_02

  4. Evaluate PV2 test result:

    • Pressure < 1.8 bar in clutch 2 → PV2 returns to zero correctly. Clear fault code.
    • Pressure ≥ 1.8 bar in clutch 2 → PV2 control valve defective. Replace mechatronic module.
  • Shift valve stuck: Replace mechatronic module.
  • PV2 control valve defective: Replace mechatronic module.
  • Tests pass: Clear fault code and road test.
  • After replacement, run ISTA adaptation and clutch learning service functions.
  • Dealer/specialist repair only.

5A5A / P2854 — Clutch B pressure discharge fault

The GS module detected that the clutch B hydraulic circuit on cut-off path 2 is not discharging pressure correctly when depressurization is commanded. This is the counterpart to P2853 on the same path.

Symptoms (3)

  • Dashboard warning: "Transmission malfunction! Drive gently" (ID 365)
  • Limp-home mode: gears 2, 4, and 6 no longer available (clutch circuit 2 locked out)
  • Only odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7) and reverse remain available

Common Causes (4)

  1. Defective shift valve in the mechatronic module. Stuck shift valve prevents clutch B circuit from venting through path 2.
  2. Sticking control valve. Proportional valve fails to return to zero position.
  3. Contaminated transmission fluid causing valve stiction.
  4. Mechatronic module solenoid driver fault.

Diagnosis Steps (7)

Precondition: Both transmission units in neutral, engine running, ISTA connected.

  1. Run cut-off path 2 test: Test_CutOff_K2_02

  2. Evaluate pressure behavior:

    • Pressure remains constant → shift valve stuck. Replace mechatronic module.
    • Pressure drops → check PV2 zero position with Test_PV2-0_02.
  3. Evaluate PV test:

    • Pressure < 1.8 bar → valve returns to zero. Clear fault code.
    • Pressure ≥ 1.8 bar → control valve defective. Replace mechatronic module.
  • Shift valve or control valve defective: Replace mechatronic module.
  • Tests pass: Clear fault code and road test.
  • After replacement, run ISTA adaptation and clutch learning service functions.
  • Dealer/specialist repair only.
