BMW fault 2E3D - HPFI control unit (line 12) activation

Description

2E3D is logged by the DME2 when it detects an electrical fault on the activation circuit for high-pressure fuel injector line 12. The HPFI control unit is the driver stage within the DME that manages current flow to each direct fuel injector during injection events. This circuit is monitored continuously while the engine runs above 40 rpm.

2E3D / P0295 Overcurrent

The DME2 measured current exceeding 3.8 A on the injector line 12 activation pin (pin 3-08) while battery voltage was between 9.5 V and 17.9 V. This means the activation circuit is drawing more current than the driver expects during a normal injection event, pointing to a low-resistance fault path.

Symptoms (4)

  • MIL illuminated after two drive cycles.
  • Rough running or audible misfire on the affected bank.
  • Possible reduced-power message on later software builds.
  • Misfire on two cylinders per the DME's protection strategy.

Common Causes (3)

  • Shorted injector winding drawing excessive current through the driver.
  • Activation wire chafed or pinched against a battery-positive source between the DME2 connector and the injector.
  • Failed injector driver stage inside the DME2.

Diagnosis Steps (5)

  1. Read fault memory with a diagnostic tool, noting whether the code is active or stored and checking for companion faults.
  2. Disconnect the injector connector on line 12 with the ignition off, clear the fault, and start the engine. If the overcurrent code is replaced by an open-circuit code on the same line, the injector is at fault. If the overcurrent returns with the injector unplugged, the fault is in the harness or DME2 driver.
  3. With the injector disconnected, measure resistance across its terminals. A reading significantly lower than the other injectors confirms a shorted winding.
  4. Inspect the harness from DME2 pin 3-08 to the injector for chafing against the camshaft cover, intake manifold, or cylinder head bolts. Any contact with a B+ source would explain the overcurrent.
  5. If both the harness and injector test good, the DME2 injector driver has failed internally.

Resolution

Replace the shorted injector and code the new unit's flow-correction value (printed on the injector body) into the DME2. If the harness is at fault, repair the damaged section with a proper splice, protect with loom, and re-route to eliminate the contact point. A failed DME2 driver requires module replacement with programming to the vehicle.

2E3D / P0294 Open circuit

The DME2 measured voltage between 4.4 V and 5.6 V at pin 3-08 while the engine was running. This mid-rail voltage means the pin is floating: the activation circuit is broken somewhere between the DME2 and the injector, and no current is reaching the injector at all.

Symptoms (4)

  • MIL illuminated after two drive cycles.
  • Complete misfire on the affected cylinder with no fuel delivery.
  • Noticeable power loss and rough idle that does not improve as the engine warms.
  • Misfire on two cylinders per the DME's protection strategy.

Common Causes (4)

  • Disconnected or partially seated injector connector, especially after recent engine bay service.
  • Broken wire in the activation harness from fatigue, corrosion at a splice, or a previously repaired joint.
  • Open injector winding from thermal cycling or internal corrosion.
  • Bent or backed-out terminal at the DME2 connector.

Diagnosis Steps (5)

  1. Read fault memory with a diagnostic tool, noting active vs. stored status and checking for companion faults.
  2. Unplug the injector connector on line 12, inspect the pins for corrosion, clean with contact cleaner if needed, and reseat firmly. Many open-circuit faults clear with this step alone.
  3. Run a continuity test on the activation wire from the injector connector terminal to DME2 pin 3-08. A good wire reads near 0 ohms. Any elevated reading points to a broken or oxidized conductor.
  4. Measure resistance across the injector's two terminals directly. An open winding reads infinite (OL). Compare against the manufacturer specification for the injector type.
  5. Inspect the DME2 connector housing at pin 3-08 for backed-out or bent terminals. Tug each wire gently to confirm proper seating.

Resolution

If the connector was simply loose, reseat it and confirm the latch engages fully. For a broken wire, repair with a soldered or crimped splice protected by adhesive heat-shrink and route away from heat and sharp edges. An open injector winding means replacement: code the new injector's flow-correction value into the DME2. After any repair, clear the fault code, run a drive cycle, and rescan to confirm the code does not return.

2E3D / P0212 Short to ground

The DME2 measured voltage below 2.1 V at pin 3-08 under conditions where battery voltage should be present. The pin is being held low by an external ground path. The OBD-II label for P0212 reads "Cylinder 12 Injector Circuit/Open," but the BMW set condition (sustained low voltage) indicates a hard short to ground.

Symptoms (4)

  • MIL illuminated after two drive cycles.
  • Severe misfire on the affected cylinder.
  • Possible engine cut-out if the short overloads the driver.
  • Possible blown fuse on the injector supply circuit if the short path is direct.

Common Causes (4)

  • Activation wire chafed or pinched against chassis ground: exhaust components, valve cover bolts, or engine brackets.
  • Water or coolant intrusion into the injector connector or DME2 connector, tracking up the harness from a leaking seal or housing.
  • Internal injector short to body, where the solenoid or piezo element has grounded to the injector housing through the cylinder head.
  • DME2 internal fault holding the pin low (rare).

Diagnosis Steps (5)

  1. Read fault memory with a diagnostic tool, checking for adjacent injector faults on the same bank, blown fuses, or DME2 internal codes that would indicate a shared short.
  2. Disconnect the injector on line 12 with the ignition off, clear the fault, and retest. If the short-to-ground code clears and is replaced by an open-circuit code, the injector itself is shorted. If the short returns with the injector unplugged, the fault is in the harness or DME2.
  3. With both ends of the activation wire disconnected, measure insulation resistance from the wire to chassis ground. A good wire reads infinite (OL). A direct short reads near 0 ohms.
  4. Inspect both connectors for evidence of moisture, green or white corrosion deposits, or coolant staining.
  5. Trace the harness from DME2 to the injector, checking every point where it contacts metal: exhaust shielding, valve cover fasteners, intake manifold studs, and chassis brackets.

Resolution

Repair the damaged wire section, protect with abrasion-resistant loom, and re-route to eliminate the original contact point. Do not simply patch the chafed area and reinstall in the same routing. If coolant intrusion caused the fault, fix the upstream leak first and replace any wiring that has absorbed coolant, as corrosion will continue. A shorted injector requires replacement with flow-value coding. Clear the code and rescan after a drive cycle to verify.
