Fault code

BMW fault 2E60 - HPFI control unit (internal communication)

P3184 · Internal communication fault

2E60 is set by DME2 when the HPFI control unit reports a CAN configuration mismatch. DME2 sends configuration data to the HPFI ECU via CAN and compares it against what the HPFI ECU reports back.

DME2 detected that the configuration data the HPFI ECU received does not match what was transmitted, indicating a communication integrity failure. Monitoring runs with terminal 15 on and battery voltage between 9.5-17.9V.

Likely cause
Faulty HPFI control unit
Common fix
Replacing the HPFI control unit

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on after the second drive cycle.
  • Possible rough running or misfires on bank 2 cylinders.
  • In some cases logged without noticeable driveability symptoms.

Common causes

  • Faulty HPFI control unit with internal processor or memory fault causing data corruption.
  • CAN bus wiring damage between DME2 and HPFI ECU causing data corruption.
  • Poor pin contact on the HPFI ECU CAN bus connector.
  • Corrupted DME2 software sending malformed configuration data.

Diagnosis

  1. Read all fault codes from DME and DME2 with ISTA. Check for additional HPFI booster codes that would confirm a broader HPFI unit failure.
  2. Inspect CAN bus wiring between DME2 and the HPFI control unit for damage, corrosion, or poor connector pin contact.
  3. Clear fault codes and test drive over two full drive cycles. If the code returns consistently, the HPFI unit is failing its configuration check.
  4. Check whether a DME2 software update is available via ISTA P. Apply if available, clear codes, and retest.
  5. If the fault persists, replace the HPFI control unit. Programming via ISTA P is required.

Resolution

Replace the HPFI control unit if wiring checks pass and DME2 software is current. The replacement unit requires programming via ISTA P. Clear all faults and test drive over at least two drive cycles to confirm the MIL does not return.
