BMW fault 2E3E - HPFI control unit (line 8) activation

Description

2E3E is logged by the DME2 when the activation circuit for high-pressure fuel injector line 8 reports a fault. The HPFI control unit is the injector driver stage built into the DME, and line 8 is one of six channels controlled by the DME2. The circuit is monitored while the engine runs above 40 rpm with battery voltage between 9.5 V and 17.9 V.

2E3E / P0283 Overcurrent

The DME2 detected current above 3.8 A on the injector line 8 activation pin (pin 3-26) during engine operation. The driver is sourcing more current than a normal injection event should produce, indicating a low-resistance fault somewhere on the circuit.

Symptoms (4)

  • MIL illuminated after two drive cycles.
  • Rough running and audible misfire on the affected bank.
  • Possible reduced-power message.
  • Misfire on two cylinders per the DME's protection strategy.

Common Causes (3)

  • Shorted injector winding causing excessive current draw through the driver stage.
  • Harness short to B+ between the DME2 connector and the injector.
  • Failed DME2 injector driver on the line 8 output stage.

Diagnosis Steps (5)

  1. Read fault memory, noting active vs. stored status and any companion faults.
  2. Unplug the injector connector on line 8, clear the fault, and start the engine. If the overcurrent code switches to an open-circuit code, the injector is at fault. If overcurrent persists, the problem is in the harness or DME2.
  3. Measure resistance across the disconnected injector's terminals. Compare against the other injectors: a significantly lower reading confirms a shorted winding.
  4. Inspect the line 8 branch of the harness for pinching, chafing, or contact with any battery-positive source.
  5. If harness and injector both test clean, the DME2 driver stage has failed.

Resolution

A shorted injector requires replacement. Code the new unit's flow-correction value into the DME2 after installation. If the harness is shorted to B+, repair the wire and address the routing problem that allowed the contact. A failed DME2 driver means module replacement with programming to the vehicle. Clear faults and rescan after a drive cycle.

2E3E / P0282 Open circuit

The DME2 measured voltage between 4.4 V and 5.6 V at pin 3-26 while the engine was running above 40 rpm. This floating mid-rail voltage means the activation circuit has no continuity between the DME2 and the injector.

Symptoms (4)

  • MIL illuminated after two drive cycles.
  • Complete misfire on the affected cylinder with zero fuel delivery.
  • Power loss and rough idle regardless of engine temperature.
  • Misfire on two cylinders per the DME's protection strategy.

Common Causes (4)

  • Partially seated or disconnected injector connector after recent service work.
  • Broken activation wire from fatigue at a flex point or a corroded splice.
  • Open injector winding from long-term thermal cycling.
  • Backed-out or contaminated terminal at the DME2 connector.

Diagnosis Steps (5)

  1. Read fault memory, noting active vs. stored status and companion faults.
  2. Inspect and reseat the line 8 injector connector. Look for corrosion on the pins, clean with contact cleaner if present, and re-engage until the latch clicks.
  3. Test continuity on the activation wire from the injector connector to DME2 pin 3-26. Good wires read near 0 ohms.
  4. Measure injector resistance directly across its terminals. An open winding reads OL.
  5. Check the DME2 connector housing at pin 3-26 for damaged or backed-out terminals.

Resolution

A loose connector is the most common cause: reseat it, verify the latch, and confirm with a gentle tug test. Broken wires need a soldered or crimped splice with heat-shrink protection, routed clear of stress points. An open injector winding means the injector has failed and needs replacement with flow-value coding into the DME2. Clear the code and verify with a drive cycle.

2E3E / P0208 Short to ground

The DME2 measured voltage below 2.1 V at pin 3-26 when battery voltage should be present at the pin. An external ground path is pulling the activation line low. The OBD-II label for P0208 reads "Cylinder 8 Injector Circuit/Open," but the BMW set condition (sustained low voltage) points to a hard short to ground.

Symptoms (4)

  • MIL illuminated after two drive cycles.
  • Severe misfire on the affected cylinder.
  • Possible engine cut-out or protection mode on more severe shorts.
  • Possible blown injector supply fuse.

Common Causes (4)

  • Harness chafed against engine metalwork: exhaust shielding, valve cover fasteners, or mounting brackets.
  • Water or coolant tracking into the injector or DME2 connector from a leaking seal.
  • Internal injector short where the element has grounded to the housing through the cylinder head.
  • DME2 internal fault (rare).

Diagnosis Steps (5)

  1. Read fault memory, checking for adjacent injector faults on the same bank, blown fuses, or DME2 internal codes that suggest a shared short.
  2. Unplug the line 8 injector, clear the code, and retest. Code clears: injector is shorted. Code returns: harness or DME2.
  3. With both ends disconnected, measure insulation resistance from the activation wire to chassis ground. Good wires read OL; direct shorts read near 0 ohms.
  4. Check both connectors for moisture, corrosion deposits, or coolant staining.
  5. Walk the harness from DME2 to the injector, looking for any point where insulation has been damaged by contact with metal.

Resolution

Fix the wire at the damaged section, protect it with abrasion-resistant loom, and eliminate the contact that caused the chafing. If moisture or coolant caused the fault, trace and repair the upstream leak before replacing the contaminated wiring. A shorted injector needs replacement with flow-value coding. Clear the fault and confirm resolution after a drive cycle.
